Exchange Autodiscover Whitepaper

Exchange Autodiscover is a service designed to make it easier for users to set up Outlook for Exchange Server. Autodiscover was first introduced with Exchange 2007 and can configure Outlook profiles for the respective mailbox on the Exchange Server without user intervention. With Outlook 2016, Autodiscover is now a prerequisite for connecting Outlook to an Exchange Server.

Autodiscover can be used to configure not only Outlook, but also other programs that access Exchange interfaces such as Exchange Web Services (EWS).

Autodiscover is also active after Outlook profiles have been set up. Outlook checks cyclically whether there are new settings, such as additional mailboxes to be integrated or new address books. All this information is distributed via Autodiscover and retrieved by the client.

Autodiscover is part of the Client Access service and therefore runs on every Exchange 2016 server.
