End of support for Exchange Server 2013

On 11.04.2023 the extended supportAs of April 11, there will no longer be any support or security updates for Exchange 2013. So there will be little time left to migrate to a newer Exchange Server version or to Microsoft 365. Anyone still using Exchange 2013 Server should therefore migrate to Exchange 2019 as soon as possible. It is also possible to migrate to Exchange 2016, but Exchange 2016 is already in Extended Support, so migrating to Exchange 2016 only makes limited sense. However, Exchange 2013 can be migrated directly to Exchange 2019 and Server 2019/2022 without an intermediate step.

The migration from Exchange 2013 to Exchange 2019 is quite simple, as the "public folder" or "public folder database" problem no longer exists. The next articles will therefore deal with the migration from Exchange 2013 to Exchange Server 2019 on Windows Server 2022.

Continuing to operate Exchange 2013 servers after the end of support is very risky, as critical security vulnerabilities are currently frequently discovered that affect Exchange 2013 through Exchange 2019. In the future, there will no longer be any security updates for Exchange 2013, but this does not mean that new critical vulnerabilities will not be included in Exchange 2013. As Exchange servers are often directly accessible via the Internet, this increases the risk that a vulnerability can be successfully exploited. In the past, numerous ransomware incidents have become known via exploited Exchange vulnerabilities.
