Microsoft Technical Summit 2016 - Home at last

After what felt like 300 km of traffic jams on the highway, I'm finally back from the Technical Summit 2016. Just like last year, the Technical Summit 2016 took place in Darmstadt at the Darmstadium. This year, however, there was an innovation: the Community Pre Day was held on December 5 with lots of interesting people and presentations. Unfortunately, the presentations were aimed more at developers, but this had the advantage that IT pros had time to drink gallons of coffee and talk about the really exciting things.

There were some interesting presentations and also the HoloLens to try out. My personal highlights were the presentations by Sigi Jagott on Exchange Server, of course, Thomas Maurer with a presentation on Nano Server and Carsten Rachfahl on Azure Stack.

Sigi even brought along some information on the upcoming innovations for Exchange Server:

Some people have probably been wishing for the planned new features for Exchange Server for a long time:

  • Restore deleted items to the correct folder (coming first for OWA, later also for Outlook)
  • REST API for local (on-premises) and hybrid Exchange organizations (Exchange 2013 and Exchange 2016)
  • Migration of public folders to Office 365, Office 365 Groups and corresponding AAD Connect support

Restoring the deleted elements to the corresponding folders should make life easier for many people; incidentally, this is about restoring from the Dumpster, not from the "Deleted elements" folder. The REST API should also be interesting. The Rest API is already available for Office 365 and will also be available for local Exchange 2013 and 2016 servers in the future.

Incidentally, the Microsoft team was very quick to publish the sessions. Some were streamed live on Channel 9 and can of course still be watched now. So if you couldn't be there, you can also watch the sessions afterwards:

I'm already looking forward to next year, unfortunately you only see a few faces at the MSTS (or under the Christmas tree Winking smile )

  1. REST API jetzt doch für on-premise Kunden ohne Hybrid? Das wären ja fantastische News :-)
Vor 2 Monaten war Microsoft da noch komplett anderer Meinung als ich in den Kommentaren nachgefragt hatte:

„Markus, we have no plans to enable this feature without hybrid.“

Hätte mir jetzt gerne das Video auf Channel9 dazu angeschaut, Videos scheinen allerdings noch nicht online zu sein?

    Gruß,
der Entwickler und IT Pro ;-)
